The consequence of an oeuvre ...

Until February 23, the Boekie Woekie & Friends festival took place in Amsterdam at Arti et Amicitiae.
The renowned independent artist’s bookstore, a place of focal interest also for Michael Gibbs, is entering a new phase of activity, due to a forced relocation. At the location of the festival artists Eva Gonggrijp and June Gibbs have produced screen prints of ‘blank’ pages, using transparent ink mixed with the finely minced ashes of Michael Gibbs, their partner and father. The printed papers were hung out to dry in a dark room, where two of Gibbs' performances were shown on video. One of these was Deuxieme Poème Symboliste (Second Symbolist Poem), showing the naked body of Gibbs being buried under printed book pages swirling down on him, to the sound of Gibbs’ voice mumbling phrases in different languages.
On Sunday, March 17, the screenprints bound into books will be presented to the public. The books will eventually end up in cabinets with other books - "tout, au monde, existe pour aboutir à un livre" / "everything, in the world, exists in order to end up as a book" (Stéphane Mallarmé).

Michael Gibbs (UK, 1949-2009) was one of many international artists who migrated to Amsterdam in the 1960s/70s. Gibbs contributed significantly to the development of the artist’s publication as an artistic and activist medium, as a poet, artist, performer, publicist and publisher. Material and conceptual limits of the book were stretched by him through installations, sound-poetry, performances, video installations and interventions. He realized a multidisciplinary and multimedia art practice which, in retrospect, is highly paradigmatic of the avant-garde of that period.

Moritz Küng will speak on his research on ‘Blank Books’. As a starting point he took Gibbs' collection of books (currently in the collection of Tate Britain) and the artist’s last essay All or Nothing, An Anthology of blank books. Küng curated the exhibition Blank. Raw. Illegible... Artist's Books as Statements at the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum (Düren/D). In his eponymous publication Küng describes and shows 259 artist’s publications that relate to the white, untouched sheet of paper or to its contrary, the fully overprinted or overwritten page.

Cees de Boer will speak on the inspiration Michael Gibbs derived from the work of the French symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898). There are illuminating parallels with Un Coup de Dés (A throw of dice, 1897), one of the last poems Mallarmé worked on, and with the mysterious, unfinished project Le Livre (The Book).

Soledad Senlle Art Foundation along with Eva Gonggrijp and G.J. de Rook initiated the 2016 festival Let it keep secrets - Michael Gibbs taking place at seven different art venues in Amsterdam. On the basis of a vast amount of archival materials, Gibbs' physical and conceptual relationship with the medium of the book became particularly evident, along with his love-hate relationship with language. Old audio and video tapes became readable and audible again and elicited the need for interpretation and action. The result of the process: How to Become a Book (Michael Gibbs) rounds the circle.

De consequentie van een oeuvre…
Tot 23 februari jongstleden vond in Amsterdam bij Arti et Amicitiae de manifestatie Boekie Woekie & Friends plaats. Michael Gibbs was kind aan huis bij de onafhankelijke kunstenaarsboekwinkel die vanwege een gedwongen verhuizing een nieuwe fase in gaat. Tijdens deze manifestatie maakten kunstenaars Eva Gonggrijp en June Gibbs op locatie zeefdrukken van ‘blanco’ pagina’s met transparante inkt, vermengd met de gezeefde en gevijzelde as van Michael Gibbs, hun partner en vader. De gedrukte bladen werden te drogen gehangen in een donkere ruimte waar op video twee performances van Gibbs te zien waren, o.a. Deuxieme Poème Symboliste, waarin een naakte Gibbs bedolven wordt onder neerdwarrelende pagina’s uit boeken, met als geluid zijn stem die frasen in verschillende talen prevelt.
Op zondag 17 maart worden de zeefdrukken die tot boek gebonden zijn, gepresenteerd. Deze zullen uiteindelijk in kasten terecht komen met andere boeken - “tout, au monde, existe pour aboutir à un livre”/ “everything, in the world, exists in order to end up as a book” (Stéphane Mallarmé).

Michael Gibbs (UK, 1949-2009) was een van de vele internationale kunstenaars die in de jaren 60/70 naar Amsterdam toog. Hij had een belangrijk aandeel in de ontwikkeling van de kunstenaarspublicatie als artistiek en activistisch medium, als dichter, kunstenaar, performer, publicist en uitgever. Materiële en conceptuele grenzen van het boek werden door hem opgerekt met installaties, sound-poetry, performances, video-installaties en interventies. Hij realiseerde een multidisciplinaire en multimediale kunstpraktijk die, achteraf gezien, in hoge mate de toenmalige avant-garde typeert.

Moritz Küng spreekt over zijn onderzoek naar ‘Blanc Books’. Hij bouwt voort op Gibbs’ verzameling (thans ondergebracht bij Tate Britain) en diens laatste essay All or Nothing, An Anthology of blank books. Küng maakte in 2023 de tentoonstelling Blank. Raw. Illegible… Artist’s Books as Statements in het Leopold-Hoesch-Museum (Düren/D). In een gelijknamige publicatie beschrijft en toont hij 259 publicatievormen die zich verhouden met het witte, onaangeraakte blad papier of juist met de overvol bedrukte of beschreven pagina.

Cees de Boer spreekt over de inspiratie die Michael Gibbs ontleende aan het werk van de symbolistische Franse dichter Stéphane Mallarmé (1842-1898). Er zijn verhelderende paralellen met o.a. Un Coup de Dés (Een worp met dobbelstenen, 1897), een van de laatste gedichten waaraan Mallarmé werkte, en met het geheimzinnige, onvoltooide project Le Livre (Het Boek).

Soledad Senlle Art Foundation initieerde samen met Eva Gonggrijp en G.J. de Rook in 2016 het festival Let it keep secrets - Michael Gibbs, verspreid over zeven verschillende kunstinstellingen in Amsterdam. Uit de enorme hoeveelheid archiefmateriaal kwamen vooral de fysieke en mentale relatie van Gibbs met het medium boek en zijn liefde-haat relatie met de taal duidelijk naar voren. Oude geluidsbanden en videotapes werden weer lees- en hoorbaar, waarmee voor de uitvoerders van dit werk de noodzaak tot interpretatie en actie zich aandiende.
