exhibition: Lisanne Sloots "Ash and Light"
opening: Friday November 30, 07
nov 30 - dec 21, 2007
Soledad Senlle Gallery
Ash is like shadow: grey-black. Both shadow and ash are a result of light energy. Ash is a stable material, it doesn't bleach in the light, it gives its colour away during the warmth of the fire.
Lisanne Sloots collected for these works the burnt remains of a 16th century smithy found during an excavation in Hoorn (Noord-Holland). She collected the visual impressions and the experience from the excavation as well as the burnt material and transformed the past into the present: from reduced (burnt) material into a new image.
In spite of the raw material, this work shows vulnerability also because of the transparent cloth and thin paper used as underground. Burnt material is used as pigment and combined with arabic gum to make paint, making the works appear both dusty and vulnerable. By using the black material her work also refers to graphic art.
The impressions become imprints, taking us back to another time and place, like echo's from the landscape.
